Kutch Ecological Research Centre (KERC), a division of The Corbett Foundation, was started in 1999 in Tera village of Abdasa taluka in Kutch district of Gujarat, with the aim to help the local communities and to study the fragile and semi-arid ecosystem of Kutch threatened by overgrazing and encroachment. The region is home to a number of endangered species like the Great Indian Bustard, Lesser Florican, Chinkara, Indian Wolf, Caracal, Desert Cat and a wide variety of migratory birds, and is in urgent need of conservation interventions. KERC has been striving for the sustainable community development in over 80 villages through the Rural Medical Outreach Programme, Cattle Development Programme and Watershed Management. Medical Camps are regularly organised at the KERC campus for the benefit of the local villagers. KERC has also been involved in the Grasslands Development Programme rejuvenation of barren land into community pastures that not only ensure adequate supply of nutritious grasses for domestic cattle but also promote soil and water conservation in the area. KERC has played an important role in facilitating the declaration of Lala Bustard Sanctuary in Naliya. Recently, KERC implemented a Rainwater Harvesting Project in Jatavandh village ensuring 0.8166 million cubic feet of freshwater storage. KERC runs its ‘Save the Bustard’ campaign in the schools around the bustard habitats.
