TCF conducted a survey of 40 villages situated inside the boundary of BTR. Special questionnaires were designed for collecting information on the socio-economic conditions of the villages, human-wildlife conflict, dependency on the forest resources, their attitude towards conservation and their expectations from and experiences with the NGOs in BTR area. In most of the villages that were surveyed, TCF found out that the economic condition of the villagers is extremely poor and most of them solely depend on the forest resources, farming and livestock for sustaining their livelihood. People did not have alternate sources of income other than that provided by the village panchayat. The crop damage by the wild animals (Chital, Porcupine, Nilgai & Wild Pig) is the main cause of human-animal conflict. None of the villages have bio-gas or LPG connections thus leaving them with no choice but to depend on the adjoining forests for fuel-wood requirements. In addition to the crop raiding, cattle lifting by Tigers and Leopards and human mauling by Tigers, Leopards and Wild Pigs is also a serious issue.
