Cattle Development Programme
KERC initiated the Cattle Development programme with the financial support from the Bombay Gowrakshak Trust in 2005. The project was initiated in Abdasa taluka of Kutch and covered 37 villages. Over the years, the programme has been very well received by the local communiies as KERC is the only organisation providing mobile veterinary care and treatment in the area. Today, this programme covers 80 villages in Abdasa taluka. The Cattle Development Programme is implemented under the following sub-heads:
Veterinary Care Programme
Most of the villagers own livestock and therefore this programme has been very useful to them. KERC operates two mobile veterinary care units each covering 7 to 8 villages in a day. Thus, all 80 villages are covered in a week. In 2009-2010, around 4000 cattle were treated under this programme. IN collaboration with the Government Veterinary Department, KERC is providing cattle vaccination facility in villages like Jatvandh, Path, Tera, Nani Dhufi, Vingaber, Bitiyari, Kuvapadhar, Moti Dhufi, Lakhaniya, Pithoranagar, Khanay, Dhanavada, Bharapar and Khanai.

Breed Improvement Programme
For better milk-yielding breeds of bufaloes and cows, KERC initiated the Breed Improvement Programme (or Artificial Cattle Insemination Programme) in 2007-2008 in partnership with BAIF Development and Research Foundation. Four Officers from BAIF have been deputed to KERC and they are implementing the programme with the help of KERC Veterinary Officers. KERC covers 80 villages under this scheme. The programme in the long run will improve the health of the domestic cattle and improve their milk-giving efficiency. In the year 2009-2010, around 1200 cases of artificial insemination were handled by KERC team. Around 300 females gave birth to hybrid calves.

Awareness and Training Programme
KERC, with its experience in the areas of Veterinary Care programme and Breed Improvement programme, realised that the general conditions of the animals in Kutch area is very poor as the cattle owners lack the necessary knowhow about cattle care. To bridge this gap and for the sustainability of the project, capacity building of the cattle owners and volunteers is essential for sustianability of this project. Thus, KERC initiatied several awareness and training programmes on topics like animal hygiene, scientific breeding, breeds, productivity, infertility, importance of vaccination and importance of nutrition.

Bulk Milk Cooling Plants
KERC has successfully facilitated the setting up of the first Bulk Milk Cooling Plant of the area in kanakpar village. The plant, set up by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and Mother's Dairy, is providing immediate market link to the vilagers owning cattle. A similar plant is being set up in Tera in collaboration with NDDB and funded by KERC.
