Before the advent of 20th century, all the streams, rivers and lakes of the Corbett country were abundantly populated by Gloden Mahseer fish. Unchecked industrialisation and unplanned development took a heavy toll on the this species in addition to several other aquatic species found in the region. Mahseer being a very popular table fish, its survival is further threatened due to over exploitation. The Ramganga (Kalagarh) reservoir is reported to have the best population of Mahseer. The Ramganga River along with its tributaries, Mandal and Palain, show great promise for Mahseer conservation in Uttarakhand as all these fall under the CTR.
However, other wetland habitats, like River Kosi flowing along the border of CTR, are under pressure due to uncontrolled destructive fishing methods such as using dynamites to kill fish, poisoning and electrocution. All these have taken a heavy toll on Mahseer population outside the CTR, with Mahseer becoming locally extinct in many areas. To address this critical issue, TCF, with the financial support from E-Pac International, UK, has been implementing the Mahseer Conservation Project in the Kosi River, mainly in a natural pool near Infinity Corbett Wilderness since past seven years. As a result of TCF’s conservation activities this, small protected pool has a high density of Mahseer in Kosi between Kumeria and Kosi Barrage. TCF educates the locals against use of destructive methods to kill Mahseer. TCF's vigilant team of “Mahseer Mitra” (Friends of Mahseer), is on duty 24X7 to discourage fishing and large-scale laundry activities. Awareness programmes are conducted with the help of the Village Eco-development Committees aimed towards the protection of Mahseer and promotion of angling (catch-and-release) activities that will ensure conservation of Mahseer in the Kosi River. Recently, TCF also completed a socio-economic survey of Mahseer fishermen communities of Ramnagar to understand their dependency on Mahseer fish and explore alternate livelihood options for the communities. TCF is working closely with the local communities and resort owners to extend similar protection for Mahseer in other stretches of Kosi, thus increasing the scope of the project.
